My favorite is Tulipa acuminata aka Fire Flame tulip, on the right, a richly earned nickname.

And I'm always so happy to see the Butterbur/Devil's Hat flowers emerge (Petasites hybridus). They are super weird and cool, and are a fitting prelude to those leaves becoming absolutely enormous and gorgeous by summer.

At 2:30pm in Kirkland, it is 110 degrees and still climbing. All-time heat records shattered. We won't discuss the state of my hydrangeas, but there are plants in the devil garden that are happy in the heat, given enough water.

For me, a new word, a new concept. According to Wikipedia, pelorism accounts for these foxgloves in my garden that look to be imitating zinnias or some such flower. I have never noticed this before. And then to have two different plants do this right next to each other??? Creepy. The etymology is well-suited for the devil garden. Wikipedia tells me that Linnaeus called this type of mutant a 'Peloria' (Greek for monster or monstrous). He purportedly wrote that "This is certainly no less remarkable than if a cow were to give birth to a calf with a wolf's head."
I love the name (credit to Nightmare before Christmas, I believe), and how it so fittingly contains xmas colors with red leaves, green leaves, and white flowers. It fits into the devil garden for several reasons--being spiny (unusual for an Epimedium), the "Nightmare" connotation, and because it stands in for the Santa/Satan anagram that tickles my brain. And even because the common name for Epimedium, fairy wings, gives it a hint of imposter status, just like so many of my devil garden plants. Evil twin/good twin--who can be certain?
It's been 3 years since my first (and only, until this year) Giant Himalayan Lily bloomed (Cardiocrinum giganteum). This year I have 3 stalks as reward for my patience. Such incredibly beautiful, impressive, and fragrant (vanilla) flowers! This is the tallest of the three, at 8 feet, though it looks rather dwarfed next to the T-Rex (Tetrapanax papyrifer 'Steroidal Giant' aka rice paper plant) to the right.

This is the first bloom on Rudbeckia occidentalis 'Green Wizard' in
the devil garden (after several years). I suspect the delay is due to lack of sun.
This year's bloom is encouraging--I'm hoping for more next year. And I
will cut shading branches back further. The top photo is from a few weeks ago. The ring of yellow florets gradually moves upward as new ones open and the older ones are done, but the overall presentation remains primarily a purple-black cone on green sepals.

The wizard has a minion! I think it's Lygaeus kalmii ("Small Milkweed Bug")--in addition to donning fiery colors to complement the devil garden, it contains cardiac glycosides in its thorax that could cause arrhythmias or worse, if I felt like having a beetle snack (no worries there). It's a bit reminiscent of a Tiki mask.
The pleated leaves are gorgeous, and the flower stalk is awesome--it has been in the process of blooming for weeks, and is now over 6 feet tall.

Pleated leaves in early spring.
</xml><![endif]-->I planted this fern (Athyrium filix femina 'Dre's Dagger') in the devil garden last year. I wasn't sure it had survived, but it's come back nicely. From a distance, it's neither remarkable nor obvious why it was a candidate for the devil garden.

But up close, the reason for its name--its strange growth habit--becomes clear. Note that half the crested pinnae criss-cross backwards over the others.
These flowers are the stars of the garden today, and are quite instrumental in cheering me up and proving that it's finally spring. Several varieties are in flower now; sadly a few others got knocked back by the long cold wet winter and I can only hope to see their flowers next spring.
It woke from hibernation in early March 2016, with new growth at the tops of surviving stalks, maybe 5-6 feet high. (I got this plant in fall 2013, and the first 2 winters, the stalks died back to the ground.)
But the inflorescence just kept stretching out and developing--a very slow process. Perhaps slowed further than normal for this plant by the lack of heat here in November. The photo below is from December 1st--could flowers beat the freeze?

No, they could not. None of the buds opened. The inflorescence drooped over, dropping failed flower buds to the ground in a slow sad drip. So sad, too bad.
But today, in late January, there are still green leaves at the top of each stalk (12'-15' up in the air--some are hidden under the drooping buds on the stalk to the right), that I imagine will get an even earlier start this year. Maybe flowers this December? One can only hope. But can I let it continue to grow so tall? Will I regret not topping it? Curiosity will probably make me leave these stalks alone to see what happens. I will also leave some of the inevitable new root-based stalks to grow up from ground level, in case these tall stalks topple from their own weight and winds later this year.
Its amazing how plants fill in over time. And I never could have predicted which plants would struggle and which would thrive. I'm learning patience and joy, so good for me (amazing what hell has wrought).

For comparison, here is a photo of part of the original planting in April 2013, same view as the second photo. Today, the red "firecracker" monarda and crocosmia (fittingly, I have both 'Lucifer' and 'Hellfire') are lush and thriving, and are already (in May!) nearly as tall as I am, filling all the space I can give them. They have bloomed profusely and reliably each July; somewhat surprisingly, since they get very little sun. If anything, the shade seems to encourage them to grow taller in search of the sun. (The blog header photo is from July of that first year, 2013, with just a handful of red monarda in bloom, visible through the gate.)
The two cornerstone plants that in large part inspired the devil garden (planted at opposite ends of the devil garden area--I imagine them calling to each other), have not done as well. The devils club (Oplopanax horridus) is surviving, but never has grown more than a few leaves and only gets about 2 feet tall. I'm hoping that with root growth it will do better, but in its third year it looks about the same as it did initially. Iris foetidissima has always looked good, but hasn't bloomed until this year. The flower is yellow and brown, not very striking, but very much anticipated. I'm really hoping it will produce scarlet seeds this year!
On a more colorful note, the orange Begonia boliviensis flowers echo the orange circle pot exactly! (The circle pot was a welcome prize from DangerGarden's blog contest.) Not sure this pairing will work long-term, seems like very little dirt for such a vigorous plant, fingers crossed. (And, yes, if you zoom in enough, you can see the wicked witch's red shoes, lower right corner.)
Aside from the name, I was fascinated by the leaves, which looked like butterflies or like pelvic bones, depending on the particular leaf or perhaps on my mood. I planted the double form (Sanguinaria canadensis 'Multiplex') two springs ago, and this is the first year it has flowered. I'm hoping it makes a nice colony, because I love it. The flower was tiny (about an inch in diameter) but amazingly beautiful, and I love the way the leaf hugs and shelters
the flower bud as it emerges from the ground. Here are a series of
photos to illustrate:
ominous overhead (that's a 5 foot fence behind it), covered with alien sky eaters. I'm borrowing this
perfect turn of phrase, coined by the Outlaw Gardener;
also his close-up photos came out better, which you can see at the
link. But at it's base, bulblets are growing. I'm hoping for new flower
stalks in 2 or 3 years.
